A traditional southern dish, beans and cornbread can be eaten at any time of the year. Beans and cornbread are easy to prepare, rich in flavor, whether you're making them as a hearty vegetable side dish or an important meal. I'll be sharing with you some tips and tricks on how to cook the best bean and cornbread, as well as variations and suggestions for serving them.

The first step to making beans and cornbread is to choose your beans. You can use any kind of dried beans you like, such as black-eyed peas, pinto beans, navy beans, or kidney beans. You will need to soak them overnight in water to soften them and reduce the cooking time. Alternatively, you can use canned beans, but make sure to rinse and drain them well before using.

Cooking your beans is the next step. This can be done with a stovetop, slowcooker or InstantPot. The basic method is to put your beans in a big pot with plenty of water, covering them by some inches. Some flavorings such as salt, pepper, bay leaves, garlic, onion, ham hock, bacon or smoked turkey may also be added. Depending on the beans, cook for 1 to 2 hours until they are tender. Then lower the heat and simmer until the beans are completely cooked. Follow the manual instructions for cooking times and temperature settings if you use a slow cooker or an instant pot.

The last step is to make your cornbread. You can make your own or even buy a mix. The ingredients for cornbread is cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, eggs, milk, and butter or oil. You can also add some extras, such as cheese, jalapeños, corn kernels, or honey. You'll need a cast iron skillet or an oven dish to bake cornbread. Set the oven at 375 F and cook your pan or serving dish. The batter then goes into the prepared pan. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

To serve your beans and cornbread, you can either spoon the beans over the cornbread or cut the cornbread into pieces and serve them separately. You can also top your beans with some shredded cheese, sour cream, salsa, cilantro, or green onions. Enjoy your beans and cornbread with a green salad or some coleslaw for a complete meal. Another classic side to go with Beans & Cornbread is Collard Greens. Use the cornbread to soak up the Collard Green Pot Liquor. Happy Cooking- Food, Fashion and Family
