Cleaning with ADHD

Have you ever wondered why it always seems like your house stays a mess? Even though you have been cleaning all day? If you have ADHD there are many reasons that could be.

For instance you got distracted, you got bored, you forgot what you were doing, lack of focus, or all of the above. I find myself starting in one room then I go to do something else that caught my attention (example: cleaning the bathroom *sees the laundry basket and remember I need to do laundry) And then forget what I was originally doing. I also find some jobs such as cleaning dishes very boring.

Well I want to tell you what has helped me stay on the task at hand. Today I want to talk about staying focused cleaning the bathroom.

First things first gather all the cleaning supplies that you need. I keep mine all on a cart so I just have to roll the cart wherever I need it. It’s nice not having to grab each product to bring it in the room. It also helps with not having to worry if I have everything. Because everything is already in the cart.

What’s in my cart? I have plastic bags, trash bags, cleaning rags, scrub brushes, window cleaner, bathroom cleaner, oven cleaner, all purpose cleaner, magic erasers, paper towels, duster, sanitizer spray, and different kinds of air fresheners.

So now that we have everything we need in the bathroom, I open up my window so the room gets fresh air and any cleaner fumes can go outside. I also like to shut the door, it helps me keep focus on the one room. You can also set a timer to help you focus on the room for how long you want to clean it.

I love to play upbeat music to help keep me in my cleaning mood. Then I start working first I remove everything on my counter/sink. Set out 2 bags (one for trash the other for things that don’t belong in that room). If you have read my previous post you might not need the second bag if you already went through all the rooms and cleaned up things that don’t belong. Now it’s on to mirrors, spray them with window cleaner and wipe them down. I use microfiber cloth to wipe my mirrors.

Next I spray down my countertop, and tub with cleaner. You can use all purpose cleaner or a bathroom specific cleaner. Then I wash my counters and scrub my tub. Next I clean my toilet, I do the toilet last because I don’t want to cross contaminate my sink or tub.

Lastly I sweep and mop the floors. Now that the bathroom is cleaned I can take the trash I collected to the trash can. Then start a load of laundry from the bathroom.

Something that might help keeping you from being bored is using cleaners that bring you joy. This May sound silly or weird, but I find some cleaners more enjoyable than others. For instance I stopped using Windex because I did not care for the smell. Instead I use Sprayway, I like the way it smells and it is a foam spray so it doesn’t run down the way Windex does. I am not an affiliate of Sprayway this is my genuine opinion. I now look forward to cleaning my windows and mirrors.

I hope this helps you in your journey and hope you continue to follow mine. -Food,Fashion, and Family
